'Westworld' star jumpstarts #IamNotOk
In a series of tweets, actress Evan Rachel Wood elaborated on past behavior that resulted from domestic abuse. A number of her fans followed suit, posting about the damage brought about by similar acts in their own lives.
Posting three old modeling photos, the “Westworld” star wrote, “The day of this photo shoot, I was so weakened by an abusive relationship. I was emaciated, severely depressed and could barely stand. I fell into a pool of tears and was sent home for the day. #IamNotOk.”
Wood then posted a more recent photo, her eyes closed and showing old scars on her wrist. “[Two] years into my abusive relationship, I resorted to self-harm,” revealed the actress. “When my abuser would threaten or attack me, I cut my wrist as a way to disarm him. It only made the abuse stop temporarily. At that point, I was desperate to stop the abuse, and I was too terrified to leave. #IamNotOk.”
Followers who were victims of abuse used the hashtag to relate their own stories, primarily about the harm caused by toxic relationships.
She retweeted some of those stories, and was supported by ex-“Two and a Half Men” actor Jon Cryer, who shared the hashtag with his fans. “It’s harrowing and heartbreaking,” he said, “but ultimately uplifting and brave,” since people can spread awareness via social media. —OLIVER PULUMBARIT
