Gilas Pilipinas in 'basketball heaven' as FIBA bid looms
MANILA, Philippines — A day before their 2019 FIBA World Cup campaign kicks off, Gilas Pilipinas is enjoying their time in China.
With the team getting in practice time in Foshan on Thursday, Gilas head coach Yeng Guiao couldn't help but express his joy and excitement before the tournament.
In an interview with ESPN5's Lyn Olavario, the veteran mentor didn't hold back in appreciating the World Cup venue.
"It's a good practice, this is a nice venue, really world class," Guao said, referring to the basketball court they were practicing in.
"I was telling the other guys kanina, pagpasok mo rito you feel like you're in basketball heaven... You just want to enjoy it, you just want to give your best, you just want to savor it, the whole thing," He said.
The Filipino cagers also had a glimpse of their Group D opponents Angola and Italy.
"Kanina andun yung Angolan team, andon yung Italian team and these are the best in the world... It's a realization that ito na talaga yung labanan, ito na talaga yung competition," Guiao said.
Despite the looming challenges, Guiao remains focused on having his team give their best and simply enjoy the experience.
"Enjoyin nalang talaga namin and we will just play our best, the best way we know how to play basketball," Guiao said.
