Ceres Negros seeks 2nd win in AFC Cup
MANILA, Philippines — Philippine champ Ceres Negros FC shoots for its second straight victory in the 2019 AFC Cup tonight as it battles Vietnamese side Becamex Binh Duong at Go Dau Stadium in Thu Dau Mot City, Vietnam.
The Busmen had a winning start in Group G of the second-tier international club football competition, beating Myanmar’s Shan United, 3-2, but it wasn’t as convincing as they set out to be in front of supporters as they squandered a 2-0 lead and barely survived the visitor’s second-half fightback.
Now complete with Dennis Villanueva back from suspension and gaining from two full weeks of preparation, the Risto Vidakovic-mentored squad looks to put up a better performance in the 6 p.m. fixture (7 p.m. Manila time) on the road.
“We analyzed the game (against Shan) and saw the mistakes we made,” Ceres captain Martin Steuble, whose side conceded two easy goals to their Burmese rivals in what should have been a runaway triumph.
“The coach showed us what to do better. Day in and day out we’re working on it and we try to avoid doing the same mistakes moving forward,” added the Fil-Swiss, who’s expected to play a key role alongside Stephan Schrock, Bienvenido Maranon, Super Herrera, Kevin Ingreso Carli de Murga and OJ Porteria.
Becamex, which totes one point after playing Persija Jakarta to a 0-0 draw in its first game in Jakarta, eyes extra maximum points against Ceres with a crew bannered by foreign Brazilian Wander Luiz, American Victor Mansaray, Kyrgyz Venjamin Shumeiko, Burikina Faso native Ali Rabo, and naturalized Din Hoang Max.
