Typhoon Ramon 'almost stationary'; LPA off E. Samar now TD Sarah
MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Ramon was “almost stationary” Tuesday afternoon ahead of its projected landfall over the Babuyan Islands as the low-pressure area (LPA) off Eastern Samar develops into Tropical Depression Sarah, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.
In its 5 p.m. weather bulletin, the state weather bureau said Ramon was last seen 120 kilometers East of Calayan, Cagayan with maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h near the eye and gustiness of up to 165 km/h.
“Movement (is) almost stationary,” Pagasa stressed.
Ramon is expected to make landfall over the Babuyan Group of Islands between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.
It is forecast to weaken after hitting land, “due to the land interaction and the northeast monsoon,” explained Pagasa.
Pagasa maintains its Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TWCS) No. 3 over Northern Portion of Cagayan (Santa Praxedes, Claveria, Sanchez Mira, Pamplona, Abulug, Ballesteros, Aparri, Calayan, Camanlaniugan, Buguey, Sanata Teresita, Gonzaga, and Sta. Ana)
TWCS No. 2, meanwhile, is still hoisted over Batanes, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and the rest of Cagayan.
Pagasa added that TWCS No. 1 remains in effect over Mt. Province, Benguet, Ifugao, La Union, Pangasinan and Northern Isabela (Sta. Maria, San Pablo, Maconacon, Cabagan, Sto. Tomas, Quezon, Delfin Albano, Tamauini, Divilacan, Quirion, Roxas, Mailig, San Manuel, Burgos, Gamu, and Ilagan City).
In Visayas, Pagasa said Tropical Depression Sarah developed at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Pagasa also said Sarah is forecast to intensify into a Tropical Storm within the next 24 hours.
As of 4 p.m., Sarah was last seen 615 km East Northeast of Borongan City, Eastern Samar or 765 km East of Legazpi City, Albay with maximum winds of up to 55 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 70 km/h.
Unlike Ramon, Sarah is moving faster at 35 km/h in a northwest direction.
Pagasa said no Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal was raised so far due to Sarah.
