Governors ask for doctor's apology over statement calling LGUs 'ignorant'

MANILA, Philippines — Governors comprising the League of Provinces of the Philippines (LPP) called on the medical team leader of Project ARK to issue an apology over her “irresponsible, reckless, and utterly false statement,” or otherwise be declared persona non grata in all 81 provinces.

In a statement, LPP quoted Dr. Ma. Dominga “Minguita” Padilla as saying “That’s why I think it’s the ignorance only on the part of the local government units (LGUs). We should lecture them, we should have seminars. We can do it for them and to educate them.”

In response, LPP said the LGUs have been “working tirelessly to address all concerns of their constituents, including returning overseas Filipinos.”

“To say that LGUs are ignorant is but a reflection of her knowledge, or lack thereof, of how LGUs have been tirelessly working and coordinating with the National Government to implement measures and provide assistance to all Filipinos to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 despite limited resources,” it said.

“The League believes that the LGUs, who carry a heavy burden and responsibility, deserve some degree of respect with their tremendous and unwavering efforts in serving their constituents during this pandemic,” LPP added.

LPP said Padilla disrespected the LGUs during a time when they cannot afford to have their constituents lose faith and trust in them.

Padilla set the LGUs’ efforts “to naught in front of the entire Filipino nation,” it added.

“We, thus, call on Dr. Padilla to own up to her inexcusable mistake and immediately issue a Public Apology for her sweeping, uninformed and insulting remarks against LGUs,” LPP said.

“Otherwise, the League will pass a Resolution declaring her persona non grata in all 81 provinces,” it added.

The LPP assured that LGUs have been working unrelentingly to win against the COVID-19 pandemic.
