Medical frontliners and hospital staffers need not sweat over finding the best routes to take in going to their respective medical facilities as Department of Transportation collaborated with Google for a hassle-free Free Ride for Health Workers service navigation. Best routes to DOTr’s free shuttle services can be easily located online by launching Google Maps on their mobile phones, desktop, or tablets. The free ride program, which has currently 19 routes, is an initiative by the department to help transport health workers to the hospitals and medical facilities during the enforcement of the Luzon-wide Enhanced Community Quarantine.

To use Google Maps:

  1. Launch Google Maps via app or web.
  2. Enter your intended destination.
  3. Tap “Directions.”
  4. Select the public transit tab or the “train” icon.
  5. Maps will immediately recommend the nearest hospital shuttle route, when available.

“The innovative initiative adds up to the convenience we wish to provide our frontline health workers as they go into battle daily against the COVID-19 pandemic,” said DOTr Sec. Arthur Tugade. “I always tell everyone that all of us, especially at this point in time, should embrace technology. It makes our lives easier. So, as we help provide our health workers with daily free rides, I am certain that partnering with digital technology will also make navigating routes the least of their worries. We want to make things easier for them, given the enormous tasks that they perform every day.”

This statement is strengthened by Google Philippines’ country director Bernadette Nacarioas she emphasized the use of technology and leveraging on what should be done to help flatten the curve in this time of crisis. “We admire and honor all our frontline workforce, both in the medical and non-medical fields, risking their personal health and lives to save others and flatten the curve. Google Philippines strives to use our technology to provide help and support during this challenging time. We hope that by making the routes of the DOTr’s free rides accessible on Google Maps, we are helping provide ease and convenience to the daily transport of our frontliners,” she said.

DOTr and Google Maps will constantly update bus routes and schedules in the app, including free shuttle services from local government units (LGUs).
