CrisisBnb: Space-for-rent owners offer free accommodation to frontliners, health workers, and stranded commuters

By Angela Casco

Since the implementation of the enhanced community quarantine, which practically locked down Metro Manila, many commuters are finding it difficult to get to where they need to be.

Among these commuters are our own frontliners including health workers, security guards, cashiers, restaurant servers, drugstore clerks, bank employees, many of whom have resorted to walking long distances just to make it in time for their shift.

In an act of volunteerism, owners of spaces for rent are making their rooms available for workers who do not have the privilege to work from home and have to carry on with their duty to deal with COVID-19.

Leading the initiative is Mirick Paala, who first posted the idea on his Facebook account.

Because only we can help each other out, would it be possible to create a platform where we can collate all the extra bed space, room, or condo unit for our health workers and other frontliners who need temporary shelter]?” he asks in a post dated March 17. “Okay kaya itong gawin? Ano sa tingin niyo [Is it okay to do this? What do you think]?”

Paala later shared Google Sheets where both space-for-rent owners willing to lend their rooms and frontliners who need the temporary accommodation can sign up.

Humihingi kami ng tulong para sa mga frontliners at health workers na nangangailangan ng pansamantalang tirahan [We ask for your help in behalf of frontliners and health workers who are in need of temporary shelter],” he writes in the post.

Apart from the sign up forms, the Paala has also provided a directory (http://bit.ly/TemporaryHousing-Directory) of the spaces open for occupancy, dubbed CrisisBNB, along with other details such as the name of homeowners, the number of frontliners that can be accommodated, location and nearby landmarks, available start and end date, as well as house rules.

As of writing, two homeowners in Manila and the Caloocan area have already pledged their spaces.
