10 ‘Parasite’ trivia to blow your mind

1. It wasn’t called Parasite.
The initial title of the film was Décalcomanie, a French word meaning transfer. Bong Joon Ho was inspired by the art concept called decalcomania, a technique of copying an image through folding the paper. For him, “when you look at the final results, both sides look identical at a first glance. But if you look at it more closely, they’re not exactly the same.”
2. The house wasn’t a house, but a sound stage.
The Park’s house, a set built from scratch, was designed by an architect named Namgoong Hyeonja. The front yard and first floor were built in an empty lot in Jeonju, South Korea. Green screen was used on top and the second floor was digitally added. The rooms were built on separate sound stages.
3. The Kim house was built on a watertank.
The house of the Kim family in the alleyway and its neighborhood were all built on a giant water tank to make the flooding scene easier.
4. Director Bong Joon Ho also co wrote the movie’s soundtrack.
The movie’s soundtrack “Soju One Glass” was sung by the lead actor Choi Woo-shik and co-written by Bong Joon Ho and the film composer Jaeil Jung.
5. The housekeeper in the movie voiced the pig in Okja.
Jeong-eun Lee, who plays the housekeeper, had collaborated twice with Bong Joon Ho, a supporting role in Mother (2009) and voiced the titular super pig in Okja (2017).
6. The noodles in the movie is not real food.
There is no dish in Korea named ram-don. It was created to make it more accessible to foreign audiences. Popularly known in Korea as Jjapaguri, ram-don is two different types of instant noodles: black bean and spicy seafood.
7. Bong Joon Ho is a serial collaborator.
Song Kang-Ho already appeared in Bong Joon Ho’s films Memories of Murder (2003), The Host (2006) and Snowpiercer (2013). Parasite is their fourth collaboration on which Ho trusted Song’s judgment and approval before making it happen.
8. Parasite was supposed to be a stage play.
Parasite wasn’t supposed to be a movie at all. Bong Joon Ho originally imagined it as a stage play in 2013.
9. Bong Joon Ho was once a tutor to a wealthy family himself.
When Bong Joon Ho was in college, he spent time as a tutor for a wealthy family. So he pulled inspiration from his own life in creating Choi Woo-shik‘s character.
10. It was the best surprise of its actors’ lives.
Song Kang-ho, Choi Woo-shik, and Park So-dam had no idea about the movie before they signed up. They didn’t regret their decision after all.
