'Hotel de Luna,' Lee Min Ho, BTS top hallyu survey

The IU-led drama “Hotel de Luna,” Lee Min Ho, BTS and the Oscar best film “Parasite” were voted as the top choices in a hallyu or Korean Wave survey.

A total of 8,000 people aged 15 to 59 were surveyed in 17 countries from Oct. 4 to 20, 2019 by the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE) and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) and the results were released recently.

In Korean dramas, respondents picked “Hotel de Luna,” which aired from July to September last year, as No. 1 with 8.2 percent followed by “Descendants of the Sun,” 3 percent; “Jewel in the Palace,” 2.3 percent, “Kingdom,” 2.1 percent; “Goblin,” 2 percent; and “Her Private Life,” 2 percent.

The respondents picked “Parasite” as their No. 1 favorite Korean movie with 12.4 percent while “Train to Busan” placed second with 7.9 percent followed by “Extreme Job,” 3.1 percent; “Along with the Gods,” 2 percent; and “Exit,” 1.5 percent.

BTS were chosen by the respondents as the top favorite Korean singer, getting 15.2 percent while BLACKPINK got second place with 6.5 percent; Psy, 5.7 percent; TWICE, 2.8 percent; and Big Bang, 2.5 percent. Other names in the survey were Girls’ Generation, G-Dragon, EXO, IU and Super Junior. In 2018, BTS also topped the survey with 10.3 percent followed by Psy, BLACKPINK, Big Bang and EXO.

Among Korean actors and actresses, Lee Min Ho placed No. 1 with 7.6 percent, the same position he held in the 2018 survey. Actress Song Hye-kyo placed second with 3.4 percent; Song Joong-ki, 1.9 percent; Gong Yoo, 1.8 percent; Suzy, 1.7 percent; and Lee Jong-suk, 1.7 percent. Other stars named in the survey were IU, Jun Ji-hyun, Park Shin-hye and Ji Chang-wook.
The respondents said K-pop is the No. 1 image associated with South Korea with 18.5 percent followed by Korean food, 12.2 percent; Korean drama, 7.8 percent; IT industry, 7.3 percent; and hallyu stars, 5.8 percent.

The countries surveyed were China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Vietnam, Australia, US, Brazil, France, UK, Russia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and South Africa.
